The ₹5 Lakh Trap: Why 80% of Indians can't name their total debt
Most people don't have a debt problem. They have a debt visibility problem. Here's the uncomfortable exercise that fixes it in 20 minutes.
The question that stops most people cold
Ask almost any urban Indian between 28 and 45: "To the nearest lakh, how much do you owe — across all EMIs, credit cards, personal loans, and informal debts?"
Most pause. Most guess. Most are wrong by at least 30%.
This isn't a moral failure. It's a design failure.
Why debt goes invisible
Modern debt is silent by nature. Your home loan EMI is on auto-debit. Your car loan is a line item you stopped noticing in month 4. Your credit cards are spread across three apps. Your ₹40,000 loan from your cousin lives only in a WhatsApp message.
The system doesn't want you to add it up. The system makes money when you don't.
Rule of thumb: If you can't state your total debt in 30 seconds, the system is winning, not you.
The ₹5 Lakh Trap, illustrated
Meet "Rohit" — a real client, name changed. 34. Software engineer. Take-home ₹1.45L/month. He came to us certain his debt was "around ₹3.5 lakhs, maybe 4."
We sat down and listed it out:
- Home loan outstanding: ₹28 lakhs (he excluded this — "that's an investment")
- Car loan: ₹4.2 lakhs
- Credit card 1 (HDFC): ₹1.8 lakhs
- Credit card 2 (SBI): ₹92,000
- Credit card 3 (Amazon Pay): ₹47,000
- Personal loan (from a fintech): ₹1.1 lakhs
- Borrowed from his brother: ₹60,000
- Borrowed from his wife's family: ₹80,000
Total non-home debt: ₹10.12 lakhs. His "₹4 lakh guess" was off by 2.5×.
Rohit isn't reckless. He's invisible-ed — a new word we use a lot at DhanNniti.
The 20-minute audit that changes everything
Open a fresh sheet. Label six columns:
| Type | Lender | Outstanding (₹) | Rate % | EMI (₹) | Tenure left |
Then fill it in, lender by lender. Don't estimate. Open the apps.
Three things will happen:
- The total will shock you. It's almost always 20–50% higher than you guessed.
- You'll see "silent killers." Those 40% interest cards that are bleeding you while you focus on the 8.5% home loan.
- You'll feel a strange, clean relief. Anxiety thrives on fog. Fog dies in a spreadsheet.
What to do with the number once you have it
Don't panic. The number is not your enemy — your ignorance of it was.
Now you have three levers:
- Reorder: Attack the highest-rate debts first (this is the avalanche method — we cover it in another essay)
- Restructure: Balance-transfer the 36% cards to 14% personal loans; it sounds obvious only after someone tells you it's possible
- Redirect: Find the ₹8,000–₹15,000/month of invisible spending almost every family leaks and point it at the attack-debt
