The 3 Phone Calls That Can Cut Your Interest Rate (Free. 45 minutes. Actual scripts.)

Every big bank has a 'retention' desk that can lower your rate by 1–2.5%. Almost no one calls it. Here are the exact scripts that work in 2026.

The 3 Phone Calls That Can Cut Your Interest Rate (Free. 45 minutes. Actual scripts.)

The secret banks don't want you to know

Every major Indian bank has a small internal team — sometimes called "retention," sometimes "customer relations," sometimes just "the manager" — whose single job is to prevent you from leaving.

They have a discretionary rate-cut of 0.5% to 2.5% they can apply to your loan without any manager approval. Most of them only use it when customers explicitly ask.

Most customers never ask. Which is why most customers silently overpay.

We're going to fix that in the next 45 minutes.

Before you call — the 3 things to have ready

  1. Your exact outstanding (open the loan statement).
  2. Your current interest rate and the date of the last reset.
  3. A competitor's rate — current home loan rate at HDFC, SBI, Axis, ICICI for your profile (google "best home loan rate India today", 30 seconds).

That last point is your leverage. No leverage = no rate cut.

Call 1 — Your existing home-loan bank

Dial: the branch that holds your loan, or the customer-care number. Ask for the "home loan customer care / retention" team.

Exact script

"Hi, I'm [Name], my loan account number is [XXX]. My current outstanding is ₹XX lakhs at X.X% floating. I've just received an offer from [Bank Y] to take over my loan at [Y.Y]%. Before I initiate a balance transfer, I wanted to give you the chance to match or beat that rate. Can you help?"

What will happen:

  • 60% of the time: they offer a 0.25–0.75% cut on the spot.
  • 30% of the time: they put you on hold, come back with a 0.5–1% cut "as a one-time gesture."
  • 10% of the time: they say no. Proceed to actually balance-transfer. (Usually the mention of it gets them to reconsider in a week.)

Common trap: they'll offer to "reset" the rate but add a small conversion fee (₹1,000–₹5,000). Let them. Anything below 0.1% of outstanding is fine.

Call 2 — Your credit card bank

Dial: the number on the back of the card. Ask for "card services" or "interest rate concession."

Exact script

"Hi, I've been a [X]-year customer. My card has ₹XX outstanding at 3.X% per month. I'm about to balance-transfer this to a personal loan at [Y.Y]% because the current rate is unmanageable. Before I do, can you offer a rate reduction or an EMI conversion at a lower rate?"

What's likely to be offered:

  • "EMI conversion at 12–16% for 6–18 months" — almost always available.
  • A "reduced interest plan" — rare, but available to 5–8 year customers.

What to accept: an EMI conversion at ≤15% for ≤18 months. Anything worse, say thank you and actually transfer.

Call 3 — A competitor bank (the leverage call)

Do this call first, actually — the quote you get becomes the ammunition for calls 1 and 2.

Dial: any major bank's loan call center. Ask for "balance transfer home loan" or "personal loan consolidation."

Exact script

"Hi, I want a quote to balance-transfer my [home loan / personal loan]. Outstanding ₹XX lakhs, current rate X.X%, property/employer [details]. I'm shopping across 3 banks. What's your best rate and processing fee?"

Get the rate in writing (email/WhatsApp is fine). Now you have leverage.

Tone rules (this matters more than the script)

  • Calm, not hostile. You're a customer reviewing options, not a teenager demanding.
  • Confident, not apologetic. Do not say "sorry to bother you."
  • Specific, not vague. Numbers, not feelings. "At this rate I pay ₹XX more per year" beats "it feels expensive."
  • Ready to walk. If they sense you won't actually leave, you won't get the cut.

Realistic outcomes

Across 200+ clients who've run this exact playbook:

  • Home loan customers: average 0.45% rate cut, saving ₹1.3–₹2.8 lakhs over the loan tenure
  • Credit card customers: 60% convert balances to 12–15% EMIs, saving ₹30k–₹1.5L
  • Personal loan customers: 40% get a 1–1.75% cut or a reduced-tenure offer

Your cost: 45 minutes and some mild discomfort. Your upside: lakhs.

The DhanNniti take

These three calls are the single highest-ROI activity most Indian debt-holders can do this month. It is the closest thing to free money that exists in personal finance.

If you want customised scripts tailored to your specific lenders, loan amounts, and a complete debt-restructuring roadmap, our Niti Strategic Assessment (₹1,969) is built for exactly that.

And if your debts are severe enough that rate cuts alone won't solve it, our Samvad Consultation (₹3,969) includes an introduction to our legal team — they can help pursue debt settlement with banks and financial institutions for as low as 35% of total debt (legal fee 5%; case-by-case, T&C apply).

Every interest rate is negotiable. The people who know this are wealthier than the people who don't.
